Photo of the Month (Maybe Longer?) - August/September - 2007

This months shot is of a praying mantis taken in the front yard. The mantis is probably only an inch to an inch and a half long. The shot is close to life size. The photo was taken using a Nikon D200 with a Nikon 105mm VR Macro lens. I like this shot eventhough the depth of field isn't perfect because you get a good look at its eye.

Praying Mantis

Photo of the Month (Maybe Longer?) - October/November - 2007

This months shot is of a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), the only hummingbird seen in most of eastern North America. This photo was taken on August 21, 2007 at 6:28 pm in the back yard with unique lighting to create the dark backrgound. For this shot I used a Nikon D200 with a Sigma 120 - 300mm f2.8 lens. Exposure was 1/250s at f2.8, ISO 100 at 300mm. I also used a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight with a flash extender for the unique lighting. This photo is cropped, but I really like the way it turned out.

Humming Bird POM Oct. Nov. 2007

Photo of the Month (Maybe Longer?) - December - 2007

This months shot is of an unknown (I haven't looked it up yet) species of dragonfly . This photo was taken on July 19, 2007 at 8:46 am along the Colorado River at Lake Mohave on the Nevada side in a small cove only accessable by boat. This shot was taken while on vacation with my Brother and Sister-In-Law an their family. For this shot I used a Nikon D200 with a Nikkor 18 - 200mm f3.5 - 5.6 lens. Exposure was 1/302s at f9, ISO 200 at 200mm. I really enjoy the level of detail captured in this shot.

Photo of the Month - January - 2008

Hey it's Winter, so this months shot is of a female Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in a snowy setting. This photo was taken on March 16, 2007 at 6:39 pm in my back yard.

For this shot I used a Nikon D200 with a Sigma 120 - 300 f2.8 lens. Exposure was 1/30s at f2.8, ISO 200 at 150mm. This is one of my favorite winter bird shots.

Cardinal

Photo of the Month - February - 2008

I thought it was time for the ducks. As best I can tell these are one day old Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) chicks. Photographing both the male and female, it would appear that the male may have been an "eclipse" or "Mexican"- Mallard intergrade.

This photo was taken on July 21, 2007 at 8:16 am along the Colorado River at Lake Mohave on the Nevada side in a small cove only accessable by boat. This is anoher shot that was taken while on vacation with my Brother and Sister-In-Law an their family.

For this shot I used a Nikon D200 with a Nikkor 18 - 200mm f3.5 - 5.6 lens. Exposure was 1/320s at f9, ISO 200 at 90mm.

Ducks

Photo of the Month - March - 2008

With Spring just around the corner, this male Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) seems like a good photo for this month. The truth is I actually took it last month!

This photo was taken on February 2, 2008 at 2:01 pm along the road just outside of the Plains, Virginia.

For this shot I used a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 120 - 300mm f2.8 lens, and a 2.0x teleconverter. Exposure was 1/500s at f11, ISO 200 at 600mm.

What's fun about this shot is that my camera was sitting on my seat and I saw this blue flash in front of me. I stopped the truck, hit the button to put the window down, picked up the camera, and took only this one shot (hand held) at 600mm before the bird flew off. I also like the way it is framed against the fence posts and barbed wire

Photo of the Month - May - 2008

Here's a shot taken in my parents back yard Woodlawn, VA on May 15, 2008. It is a Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum).

For this shot I used a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 120 - 300mm f2.8 lens, and a 2.0x teleconverter. Exposure was 1/250s at f8, ISO 200 at 550mm.

This shot was take through the glass in the back window so it isn't as sharp as I would like,

Photo of the Month - June - 2008

This is where you will find the photo of the month.

It's getting hot outside, in the 90's so this American Robin (Turdus migratorius) thought it might be a good idea to cool off in the bird bath.

This photo was taken in my back yard on June 14, 2008.

For this shot I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 18 - 200mm f3.5 - 5.6 lens. Exposure was 1/200s at f7.1, ISO 200 at 200mm.

Robin June 08

Photo of the Month - July - 2008

I've been looking for a Red-headed Woopecker (Melanerpes eryhrocephalus) for some time. Well I finally found one in Glochester, Virginia on May 25, 2008. I was able to get serveral shots of this good looking male.

For this shot I used a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 120 - 300mm f2.8 lens, and 2X teleconverter. Exposure was at f9.0, ISO 200 at 550mm.

Photo of the Month - August - 2008

Here's a shot of a (I think?) Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele). Maybe someone can tell me if I am correct, leave me a message in the guestbook. The photo was taken on a great sumer day last month in July (7/12/08 @ 2:52pm) in the Shenandoah Mountains along Skyline Drive. There were several dozen flying by.

For this shot I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 18 - 200mm f3.5 - 5.6 lens. Exposure was 1/100s at f5.6, ISO 200 at 200mm.

Butterfly

Photo of the Month - September - 2008

This is a shot of Bailey - He is the newest member of our pack. We adopted Bailey from New York Shiba Inu Rescue TODAY! (Sept. 1, 2008) Bailey is about 2 years old, and we are very excited to have him join us.

I know, not a true "wildlife" shot, but as the newest member of the family and given that we adopted him on Sept. 1 (Labor Day) it just seems right!

For this shot I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 lens. Exposure was 1/160s at f6.3, ISO 200 at 50mm, with a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight

Photo of the Month - September - 2008

This is where you will find the photo of the month.

This is a photo I took on my vacation last month to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Avon, NC to be exact. I'm not one for taking my camera to the beach, but there were just too many things to take pictures of so I did it. Because I enjoyed the photography so much down there you may see more shots from the beach in the coming months.

I think this is a Willet (Catoptrophorus semipalmatus), but I'm loosing my touch on identification of shore birds.

For this shot I used a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 18 - 200mm f3.5 - 5.6 lens. Exposure was 1/500s at f9, ISO 200 at 200mm.
